Brianna Bear is a Songhees artist and Knowledge Keeper based in Victoria, BC, on the traditional lands of the Lekwungen-speaking peoples. With over fifteen years of experience as an artist, Brianna’s work intertwines cultural teachings, local knowledge, and storytelling — bringing awareness to the deep connections between land, identity, and creative expression.
She began learning formline design and cultural teachings from her grandfather Skip and his brother, Master Carver Butch Dick, whose mentorship guided her early artistic journey. Through her art, Brianna continues to explore and share Songhees and Namgis design elements, blending traditional form with contemporary style in ways that honour her community and lineage.
Alongside her artistic practice, Brianna also carries the responsibility of opening community gatherings — a role she began in her mid-twenties under her grandfather’s guidance. For over a decade, she has spoken and opened events across government, educational, and community spaces, inviting audiences into reflection, curiosity, and connection with the lands and peoples of this territory.
Each of Brianna’s pieces tells a story — of resilience, teachings, and the beauty of her culture — woven together in the lines, forms, and colours that speak to both tradition and the present day.
